Andaikan Semua Ini di Malang

Tokoh kita bangun pagi-pagi di tempat kosnya di Jl. Jombang 1A. Setelah mandi dingin-dingin, dia pun berangkat ke kampus. Dia kuliah di Program Pasca Sarjana, di Universitas Negeri Malang, mengambil Magister untuk Bahasa & Sastra Indonesia. Ketika itu tahun 2005.

Di jalan dia berpapasan dengan seorang teman sekelasnya, seorang mahasiswa asal Malaysia yang mengambil Magister Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia dan sedang melakukan penelitian tentang Sastra Indonesia Angkatan 66. Mereka berbincang-bincang sejenak, si teman Malaysia harus segera naik ke mikrolet begitu ada Mikrolet datang ke arah kota (jalur LG).

Bahasa & Sastra Inggris, Sastra Inggris, Sarjana Sastra

Mari kita mulai dengan seingat saya: ketika baru mulai kuliah S1 Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris dulu, saya mendapat daftar mata kuliah yang bisa saya ambil selama 4 tahun ke depan. Kuliah2 itu antara lain English Intensive Course, mata kuliah ketrampilan dasar (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking I-IV), mata kuliah Extensive Reading, mata kuliah linguistik (Intro to Ling., Syntax, Semantics, Phonology dll), mata kuliah sastra (Intro to Lit., Prose, Poetry, Drama), dan kalau sudah ambil jurusan Linguistik nantinya akan ambil Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, dll, dan kalau ambil jurusan Sastra nantinya akan ambil Literary Theory and Crit., Advanced Prose, Poetry, Drama, Trends and Issues in Literature, dll. Setelah itu, kita jadi sarjana sastra atau sarjana linguistik.

Tapi tentu saja, karena baca karya sastranya terbatas pada kuliah Prose, Poetry, Drama plus Advanced Prose, Poetry, Drama plus Extensive Reading, dan belajar kritik, teori dan sejarah sastranya hanya di Intro to Lit. dan Literary Theory and Crit. dan Trends and Issues in Lit., maka menyebut diri Sarjana Sastra pun jadi agak kurang pede.

Tentu, kekurangbanyakan bacaan sastra (dengan kata lain, kekurangbanyakan kemampuan dalam bidang yang semestinya menjadi bidang keahlian kita sebagai “sarjana”) banyak disebabkan oleh banyaknya waktu yang harus saya habiskan untuk belajar ketrampilan dasar bahasa Inggris DAN mata kuliah yang, well, kurang penting buat bidang keahlian saya tapi wajib saya ambil (mis., Agama, Kewiraan, Ilmu Alamiah Dasar, dll).

Kahlil Gibran: His Life and World (2)

Again, about the biography Kahlil Gibran I started to talk about a few posts ago. FYI, the book is written by Jean Gibran and Kahlil Gibran. Super FYI, the Kahlil Gibran that co-authors this biography is not the Kahlil Gibran we know as “the Poet” or “the Prophet”. This Kahlil Gibran is the son to the Poet Kahlil Gibran’s cousin N’oula Gibran, who happened to bear the Poet’s name (probably because N’oula Gibran was so impressed by Kahlil Gibran the Poet himself). And Jean Gibran, as you might guess, is the biography author Kahlil Gibran’s wife.

OK, one confusion gone, let’s go to another interesting thing about the biography: the authors’ boldness to demystify the Poet Kahlil Gibran (hencetoforth, when I say “Kahlil Gibran” it means Kahlil Gibran the Poet unless stated otherwise). You’ll find a lot of demystification applied when you come to read the book. For the time being, I will only show one of them.

One of Kahlil Gibran’s essays states that as a kid he had an uneventful accident which caused him a broken shoulder blade. Gibran’s said that when he was healed his shoulder was sort of deformed. Following a local medical wisdom, he had to let some medicine man “fixed” his shoulder blade by breaking it again and put it in its right position. To avoid deformation, he had to be tied to a cross for forty days. According to this current biography, actually that “GIBRAN HAD TO BE TIED TO A CROSS FOR FORTY DAYS” is an exaggeration. Kahlil Gibran told the story so to make him look like a Christ figure, who was ON THE CROSS and had to be BURIED FOR FORTY DAYS.

That’s one of the important things about the biography of Kahlil Gibran that I can tell you for now. Expect to hear more.

Kahlil Gibran: His Life and World (review)

So, for the umpteenth time, here I am, reading yet another biography of the Great Poet Kahlil Gibran. This time, it’s one written by a couple called Jean Gibran and Kahlil Gibran. The second Kahlil here is the Poet’s own niece who goes by the same name.

I just started reading the book and have only read about the possible origins of the Gibrans in a small lonely limestone city of Besharri, under the looming white apparition called Mt. Lebanon and Kahlil’s first months in South End, home to the immigrant community in the city of Boston.

Many years ago I read a biography of Kahlil Gibran by Suheil Bushrui. Thinking about the book in retrospect, I think Bushrui doesn’t have very much to say about the social condition of the South End during Gibran’s childhood. But this current book I’m reading has more to say. It combines information from Gibran’s own accounts (that he wrote years and years later), newspaper bits, and statistical documents kept by the city of Boston. Pretty much, His Life and World aims to re-create the atmosphere of South End that helped the birth of the Poet as a young man.

Skripsi Penerjemahan Sastra

Terjemahan sastra akhirnya bisa dihargai sebagai skripsi di Universitas Negeri Malang. Begitulah kabar yang saya temukan dari sebuah status facebook pak Arif Subiyanto beberapa waktu yang lalu. Dari komentasi (aksi berbalas komen) yang mengikuti status update tersebut, ada berbagai pandangan terkait skripsi “kreatif” tersebut: ada yang mempertanyakan karena jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris sendiri tidak punya profesor bidang penerjemahan (sastra), ada yang berkomentar “enak sekali mahasiswa sekarang” (yang tentunya memandang penerjemahan sastra sebagai sesuatu yang tidak sesulit skripsi dalam pengerjaannya), dan sebagainya dan sebagainya. Tepat esok harinya, waktu nunggu antrian tambal gigi di Puskesmas dinoyo, saya menyempatkan diri nulis komen di HP. Kini, setelah lewat sebulan, saya baru ingat kalau saya pernah nulis komen dan belum menguploadnya di blog. Baiklah:

Tentu ada beberapa hal yang bisa dijadikan pertimbangan ketika sebuah jurusan/universitas mengizinkan mahasiswanya membuat karya kreatif (karya rupa, fotografi, prosa, puisi, atau penerjemahan sastra). Dalam posting ini, saya memfokuskan pada penerjemahan sastra dulu. Untuk selanjutnya ya monggo dilanjutkan sendiri-sendiri.
