Indonesian Voyagers "Reached" America Way Before Columbus?

Okay, let me quote you a full paragraph from the controversially Muslim "road odyssey [travelog] through Islamic America" entitled Blue-Eyed Devil by Michael Muhammad Knight:
Crane visited the Cherokees as Nixon's official envoy, where he learned that they originally lived on an island in the Caribbean and based their religion on a book that had been brought over bby ships from the East. Crane believes that the ships came from the Emir of Mali, Abu Bakr, who sent trans-Atlantic expeditions after meeting Chinese Muslims in Mecca. By that line of thought, the Qur'an makes its American debut around 1310 A.D.--though Harvard Linguist Barry Fell believed in an earlier trans-Pacific voyage by Indonesian Muslims, evidenced by Death Valley petroglyphs reading "Yasua bin Maryam" in Arabic letters.
So, hows that sound? But before too far, I think I have to tell you that there are some points made by Mike Knight in that book, related in one way or another to Indonesia/Java, are not fully accurate. But it's kind of shocking, right? Is it a challenge for you, historians? Let's see what they've got to say...
